Inter-relation between flares, CMEs, and coronal waves

Manuela Temmer (University of Graz, Austria)

Solar flares represent an explosive release of energy on time scales of minutes to hours, in the form of high-energetic particles, plasma heating and flows. CMEs are huge amounts of magnetized plasma expelled into the interplanetary space (where they are called ICMEs) with hundreds to thousands of km/s, occasionally heading towards Earth. Both events are frequently associated with large-scale large-amplitude waves and shocks in the solar atmosphere, so-called EIT (EUV) and Moreton waves. The talk will focus on recent resarch results about the CME/flare feedback relation and association of such eruptive phenomena to coronal waves observed with STEREO.
